Gas prices are hitting new highs amid the Ukraine Russia conflict, and Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are wasting no time in heeding former Obama White House Advisor Rahm Emanuel’s famous dictum to “never let a serious crisis go to waste.” During a White House event on Monday, the former and potential future rivals unveiled President Joe Biden’s five year, $7.5 billion plan to relieve pressure at the pump and on the Democratic Party’s fortunes: electric buses.
As Americans resume their daily work commutes, $4 per gallon gas prices are guzzling up the family budget. But pain at the pump presents a green opportunity. The administration hopes the current crisis might finally break America’s love affair with the automobile. As a beaming Harris cheered, “We are all in the midst of a turning point.” “Imagine,” the vice president implored, “a future” where electric buses “take children to school and parents to work.”
“Are you kidding me?” Oklahoma Republican Congressman Markwayne Mullin, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, tweeted in response. “The Biden Administration could not be more tone-deaf.” The New York Times reports that the price for a gallon of gas has gone up 10% from just a week ago. Sticker shock has drivers asking the Grey Lady, “Is this for real?”
So, while Harris and Buttigieg dream of a future filled with electric buses, Democrats are imagining an epic crash come November.
