Democratic leaders are sweeping into Chicago, this week, to prepare for the summer presidential nominating bash in the Windy City. Party officials insist that the theme for the week is “unity” as a new poll from the New York Times and Siena College shows President Joe Biden nearly pulling even with his much indicted, Republican rival, Donald Trump. Disaffected 2020 Biden voters appear to be slowly returning to the fold. But underneath the unified facade, many Democrats fear that this summer’s conclave could descend in mayhem.

Anti-Israel activists expect as many as 30,000 protesters to disrupt the political festivities despite the city’s refusal to allow marchers within four miles of the convention. Chicago police are planning for mass arrests in case the demonstrations spiral. The American Civil Liberties Union has already filed a legal complaint accusing the city of trampling on free speech rights.

Hatem Abudayyeh, executive director of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, declares the upcoming convention “the most important one since 1968, also in Chicago when Vietnam War protesters and the Black liberation movement organized mass demonstrations that were violently repressed.” Over the weekend, 300 activists gathered in Chicago to strategize. One group of attendees eagerly learned to chant in Farsi, “Down with Israel!  Down with America!” An organizer with 20 mass pro-Palestinian protests under his keffiyeh predicts hundreds of thousands will join them. Democrats tell Politico everything is under control.
