Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi may want to project a unified front in support of “our friend, the Israelis” against the depravities unleashed by Hamas, this weekend.  But there was no hiding the real and growing schism in the Democrat Party over the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  After a decade of steadily shifting opinion among the rank and file, the old guard’s traditional support for America’s ally in the Middle East has been decisively overtaken by the progressive’s solidarity with the Palestinians cause.  As Gallup reported this spring, more Democrats now sympathize with Palestinians than the Israelis, 49% to 38%.  “The Squad” is at the vanguard of this leftward swing, not merely “restricted to the fringes” of the party, as the New York Times attempted to reassure its readers, this week.

Democratic disarray surfaced in the first moments that Americans learned of the Hamas’ attack.  Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the Office of Palestinian Affairs both tweeted and then deleted appeals for Israeli restraint.  It took another twelve hours for President Joe Biden to confirm, “My administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering.”  Unmoved by the statement from the top, members of “The Squad” publicly denounced Israel as an “apartheid state” even as two Democrat colleagues, Congressman Dan Goldman and Senator Cory Booker, were on the ground scrambling for cover from Hamas’ rockets and killers.  Unwavering will become untenable, soon.
